Preforming for Lightweight Construction

The CO2 emission regulation of vehicle fleets as well as the call for less energy consumption are strong drivers for light­weight construction. The resin transfer moulding consisting of several process stages offers a great potential for the series production of fiber reinforced plastics. Therefore, the research at the Institute of Production Science (wbk) is fo­cused on automating the sub-process chain of preforming. Within this sub-process chain, the forming of flat, textile materials into complex three-dimensional fiber structures takes place. Here, the development of an intelligent and resource-efficient gripping system represents a key techno­logy for the automated handling of flexible textile semi-finished parts that are to be processed.
